LAYERS

the Velázquez Venus frayed
at the edges where thieves
had cut it from the frame

a man comes home to his wife
revolver in hand and is surprised
to find her there alone while
the night clerk who rents
the room upstairs dreams
of owls anthills and hyenas
a cat's crouch before it springs
an onyx table strewn with
crushed lily petals floating
over its smoked reflection of
cedars through a leaded window

he opens his eyes and discovers
himself on the other side
of the Velázquez mirror

now he sees her image clearly
she passed through him and
never saw his body because
it occupies this space forever
in a separate dimension of time

Message from Igor Bartolech, I am sorry to announce that a dear friend and a very important artist, Mr. Shozo Shimamoto, of Osaka, Japan, passed away on Friday, January 25th, three days after his 85th birthday. He was a pioneer as one of the original members of the Gutai art movement in the 50s and then took up mail art, spending subsequent decades as a performer on an international stage and a teacher of younger artists everywhere.

Stamp sheet by John Held who organizes a tribute project to the Gutai movement in 2013 and invited Mr Shiraga to perform IF still possible
